Choosing a Garden Cart

If you are finding the task of carting garden waste and other items from in and out your garden is becoming a bit of a mammoth task in and of itself then you might wish to consider investing in a new garden cart designed for your needs. There are several ways in which a garden cart can help you to manage your garden needs.

  • Lift heavier items such as bricks without causing yourself any strain or injury
  • Move items easily and quickly all in one go
  • Remove garden waste quickly
The type of garden cart you should choose however depends on what you will be using your garden cart primarily for. There are several features and aspects of a garden cart to consider before making any kind of purchase.

GARDEN CART CAPACITY

Your garden cart needs to be able to hold everything you want it to. This could mean a volume capacity or maximum weight load. If you plan to move heavy items such as bricks and wood then you need to make sure your garden cart is going to be up for the job. Ask the supplier for information regarding the weight limits on their garden carts. If you will be moving fluid or loose fine garden items such as soil or sand then you will need to make sure you have the right volume garden cart.

GARDEN CART DIMENSIONS

The dimensions of your garden cart could be very important but is often overlooked by first time buyers. While you may wish to obtain the largest garden cart you can find, a garden trolley that is too large to fit through your garden gate or other access is not going to be very useful for you. In these cases you may have little choice but to obtain a slightly smaller garden cart and move your garden items a bit at a time. Plan this out ahead of time, work out a suitable garden cart dimensions versus capacity requirements.

TROLLEY OR FULL

Bear in mind when you make a trolley purchase that the metal grid will be unsuitable for some garden tasks such as moving soil and sand. If you think you may need these aspects regularly then invest in a full plastic or metal cart instead. Alternatively you can purchase one of each for each specific job if you think this is easier and you have the funding for it!

FUNCTIONALITY

Some carts for the garden will have extra functionality, for example some dump carts have a tipping feature to allow you to unload things easily and quickly. Trolleys sometimes also come with drop down sides to allow you to remove bigger items easily or to load them up without having to strain to carry them over the sides to get them in. Typically speaking full carts will have extra functionality designed to make loading fine waste into such as soil, sand etc whereas trolleys will have extra functionality specifically designed for loading large bulky items.

TIRES/TYRES

Make sure the cart you are buying has strong tough tires that can handle the weight and surface you will be using them on. We recommend 10 inch pneumatic tires for general all purpose gardening. These will last a long time and can handle a reasonable weight capacity.
